Awards 2012 - City Car: Fiat 500

Date: 24 January 2012

It's now four years at the top of the BusinessCar Awards city car category for the Fiat 500. The retro hatchback can seem to do no wrong, as it continues to be lauded by fleet and retail sector drivers alike for its cute styling and small engines with low running costs. It's perhaps surprising the four-year old 500 has retained such unabated appeal, but as far as our readers are concerned, it's still very much in fashion.

The innovative two-cylinder petrol Twinair engine is the most appealing option, as it emits as little as 92g/km with an official 70.6mpg. It's full of character and ideal for urban drivers, but less so for anyone who spends the bulk of their time on the motorway. There are 1.2- and 1.4-litre petrols and a 1.3-litre Multijet turbodiesel for those who require something a little more long-legged.

Last year, Fiat said a hybrid version of the 500 was on the way, which would have further secured its place as our class winner. That has yet to materialise, but we're still being told it's in the offing. If it makes it within the next 12 months then it's a good bet the 500 will cling on to its class win this time next year.
