Awards 2012 - Sports: Audi R8

Date: 24 January 2012

This is the only category of the BusinessCar Awards where heart entirely takes over from head, and a model's desirability is the most important factor.

It's a sign of how far the Audi brand has come that the firm has completely dominated the Sports category in recent years. First a pair of wins for the TT, then the A5 Coupe got in on the act before the R8 supercar took over for what is, in 2012, now a hat-trick of victories.

The R8 looks sensational, and the drive isn't far short of that either, as Audi gave Porsche's 911 some genuine competition for the first time in a while when it comes to supercars around the £100,000 mark. Since launch, Audi has developed the R8 range with a Convertible model joining the Coupe, and a second, more powerful engine.

The line-up starts at £87,935 for the 430hp 4.2 V8 Coupe, with the drop-top Spyder version offered for an additional £8660, while the later addition of the 5.2-litre V10 engine with 525hp takes the Coupe to £109,090 and the Spyder to £117,710.

And what about the fuel consumption? If it's even a concern then you won't be able to afford to run an R8, but the V8 Coupe gets as high as 21.2mpg with the automatic gearbox, while the V10 in manual form has an official 19.0mpg.
