The residual value expert's view
Rupert Pontin, chief cars editor at Glass's, reveals the key trends fleets should consider when picking colour options for their company car drivers.
White and metallic white demand a premium for most manufacturers. According to Pontin, white works when there is a contrast with other exterior specification options. He says: "Nice alloys and tinted windows contrast well. Fleets should avoid block whites, which can look tatty with age. The newer pearlescent/metallic whites might not have the same problem, though.
"Metallic brown is being pushed hard by the manufacturers, but thus far has proven that it is not popular."
While white has become a popular choice - it is more in vogue for larger cars with higher spec - fleets should avoid speccing run-of-the-mill lower medium and even upper medium saloon models in white.
Red is good for small and mid-range cars, especially when sporty. Pontin says: "High-value and premium brands do not respond well to red unless it is in very low volumes for sporty models.
"Premium manufacturers are trying to pair 4x4 models with brown, but this has not worked. The timeless colours tend to be a safe bet in almost every market sector."
