Vauxhall will roll out its OnStar in-car connectivity technology across its range this year, and fleet sales director James Taylor says it is as important as a new model launch for the brand.
OnStar can turn the car into a mobile wi-fi hotspot, but there are a multitude of services that Taylor believes will make it a big opportunity for the brand in fleet.
Vehicles fitted with the technology will automatically contact the emergency services in the event of an accident where the airbags are deployed, while drivers will be able to remotely link to their car with their smartphone to check oil and tyre pressures, and will even be able to unlock their car through a secure app if they accidently lock themselves out.
OnStar will also let drivers send navigation details from their phone to the car ahead of their journey, and the car's diagnostics can send monthly updates on vehicle health.
The system also comes with tracking technology and a service where an advisor will work with police to recover the vehicle. There is an emergency button, too, which can be linked with roadside assistance if the car has a flat tyre or runs out of fuel.
Vauxhall parent company GM has already launched OnStar in the US, Canada and Mexico, and the service is live with 6.5 million customers across those countries. Vauxhall is yet to confirm if all or a select amount of models will get the service in the UK, but it is likely the core fleet models of Astra, Corsa and Insignia will get it. Taylor could not confirm what the pricing strategy would be, but said more details will be revealed at the Geneva motor show next month.
