Few companies are as dedicated to making a tangible impact in the race toward net zero as OVO. Since its founding in 2009, the energy provider has championed a mission to make energy better for both people and the planet.

With a bold sustainability strategy, ambitious electrification goals, and a rapidly expanding electric vehicle fleet, OVO is leading the charge in proving that the future of transportation is undeniably electric.

At the helm of this transformation is S-J Mitchell, a fleet manager with over 16 years of industry experience. Since joining OVO in 2020, S-J has played a pivotal role in driving the company’s ambitious shift to an all-electric fleet, ensuring that sustainability is embedded in every operational decision.

“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” says S-J. “We’re not just talking about sustainability – we’re actively implementing it, and that’s what makes my role here so rewarding.”

Building a career in fleet management

For S-J, the journey to managing one of the UK’s most forward-thinking fleets began in 2008. Starting as a fleet administrator, she quickly developed a passion for the complex logistics of fleet operations and ascended rapidly through the ranks.

“I became fascinated by the intricacies of fleet management,” she says. “Over nine years, I progressed to managing a fleet of over 2,500 vehicles, including cars and vans. This role was crucial in honing my attention to detail, ability to juggle responsibilities across divisions, and focus on cost efficiency and driver support.”

After nearly a decade of refining her skills on the operator side, S-J embraced a new challenge with a major car rental provider. This role offered her the chance to build expertise on the supplier side of the industry, forging relationships with OEMs and livery providers while launching new services for commercial clients. This phase of her career deepened her understanding of fleet-supplier dynamics and sharpened her ability to balance customer needs with operational delivery.

“This shift was pivotal,” she explains. “It expanded my perspective, allowing me to understand fleet management from both sides of the equation.”

But it was the chance to blend her professional expertise with a personal commitment to sustainability that ultimately led S-J to OVO.

“Joining OVO in 2020 was a pivotal moment in my career, aligning my professional journey with my personal passion for sustainability,” says S-J. “At OVO, I’ve been deeply involved in initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions, transitioning our fleet to electric vehicles, and embedding sustainable practices throughout operations.”

When asked about her role, S-J reflects on how it has challenged her in many ways. “From navigating complex supplier negotiations to tackling operational hurdles, I’ve learned the importance of agility and problem-solving,” she says. “OVO’s innovative culture has also inspired me to explore new technologies and strategies, boosting both my expertise and confidence in fleet management.”

OVO’s dedication to sustainability is no small feat. Its Plan Zero strategy lays out a clear roadmap to achieve net-zero emissions by 2035. This vision is backed by tangible actions, including taking a leadership role in fleet electrification.

“One of the things I love most about working here is that sustainability isn’t just a checkbox—it’s at the heart of everything we do,” S-J says. “We’re genuinely committed to making a meaningful difference, and you can feel that in every aspect of the company.”

Going above and beyond

Founded with a mission to transform energy for the better, OVO now serves around four million customers across the UK. However, the company’s impact extends far beyond energy tariffs. OVO is helping households reduce their carbon footprints through renewable energy projects, low-carbon technologies, and innovative customer reward programs.

One standout initiative is OVO Beyond, the UK’s first energy savings account designed to help customers make greener choices while earning rewards for the future. Through OVO Beyond, customers can earn free EV miles that they can redeem when they make the switch to an electric vehicle.

“OVO Beyond is a powerful tool that empowers customers to take control of their decarbonisation journey,” says S-J. “It’s an incredible way that OVO is supporting and motivating customers to embrace sustainability and bank rewards for their future.”

For S-J, the alignment of the company’s values with her own was a major draw.

“What drew me to OVO was its bold commitment to net-zero and its drive to empower people to make greener choices,” she says. “The company’s values resonate deeply with me, and my role allows me to contribute meaningfully to both its sustainability goals and broader innovation in the transportation sector.”

Shaping the future of energy

One of the most fulfilling aspects of S-J’s work is knowing that her efforts contribute to a greener, more sustainable future. “The energy sector is at the forefront of tackling climate change, and being part of this journey – especially with a focus on renewable energy and sustainability – makes me feel like I’m making a meaningful impact,” she says.

The energy sector is currently undergoing a significant transformation, driven by advancements in technology, infrastructure, and sustainability practices. “It’s exciting to be part of an industry that’s not only adapting to change but actively driving it. Every day presents new challenges and opportunities to learn, grow, and innovate.”

S-J also values the forward-thinking, solution-driven people the sector attracts. “Collaborating with like-minded individuals who share a passion for building a sustainable energy system is both inspiring and energising.

“The fast-paced evolution of the energy sector keeps me engaged and always learning. Whether it’s understanding new regulations, integrating innovative technologies, or navigating market shifts, the sector offers endless opportunities to expand my skills and knowledge,” she adds.

The electrification journey

One of the most significant milestones in S-J’s career at OVO has been spearheading the transition to an all-electric fleet. When she joined the company, OVO had already committed to switching its entire fleet to electric vehicles by 2030 as part of its membership with EV100—a global initiative focused on accelerating the shift to electric transport.

That ambitious goal is firmly on track. As of January 2025, OVO’s car fleet comprises 94 vehicles, predominantly featuring Kia Niros, MGs, and the new Hyundai Kona, with an impressive 93 of them already fully electric.

“We’ve made incredible progress, with 98% of our fleet fully electric by the end of 2024. This achievement reflects the hard work and commitment of our team, our close collaboration with vehicle providers, and our efforts to make EV charging accessible for all drivers – whether through public stations or home charging solutions. Our priority has always been to ensure a smooth transition for our drivers.”

To achieve a 100% electric fleet, S-J highlights ongoing challenges such as charging accessibility in remote areas and the need for electric vans in specialist roles. “We’re working closely with manufacturers and suppliers to source vehicles that meet all operational needs. We also stay at the forefront of new technologies and innovations in electric vehicles to ensure we’re adapting to the changing landscape.”

Looking ahead, OVO will continue to push forward, aligning policies, infrastructure, and driver support systems to meet its electrification goals. This mission is central to the company’s broader sustainability vision and underscores its steadfast commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The final hybrid vehicle is set to be phased out soon, with the fleet on track to be entirely electric in the near future.

“It’s been immensely satisfying to see our fleet align with the company’s sustainability goals, contributing to a greener future. This project has allowed me to work closely with various teams across the business, build strong supplier relationships, and push boundaries to find innovative solutions,” she explains.

“OVO has now successfully removed all of the diesel cars from our fleet and will be focusing on becoming a 100% electric car fleet in the very near future,” says S-J.

The transition hasn’t come without its challenges, but S-J says collaboration has been key.

“Collaboration with strategic partners has been crucial in our journey towards full electrification. Transitioning a fleet of our size to electric requires a robust ecosystem,” she notes. “One of our key collaborations has been with vehicle manufacturers and leasing companies, like Zenith, to secure a consistent supply of electric vehicles tailored to our operational needs.”

Electrifying the van fleet

Beyond cars, OVO operates 760 commercial vehicles, a critical part of its operations. Electrifying these vehicles has required careful planning, particularly given the current limitations in electric van availability and infrastructure.

“Predominantly our van mix is with Vauxhall and Toyota,” says S-J. “We have less than 20 ICE vehicles remaining in the commercial fleet, and these will be reduced to zero by the end of 2025, ensuring we become a 100% fully electric fleet.”

Why electrification?

For OVO, electrification is more than just a checkbox – it’s about setting the standard for sustainability and leading by example.

“As an energy company, driving the shift to electrification is deeply aligned with our core mission to build a sustainable future,” says S-J. “At OVO, we take responsibility for reducing carbon emissions, not only within our operations but also across the broader energy sector.”

By electrifying its fleet, OVO is cutting its own emissions while proving that large-scale electric vehicle adoption is not only possible but practical. The company’s efforts provide a powerful model for others to emulate.

“Our leadership in electrification sends a clear message to our stakeholders – manufacturers, policymakers, and the public – that a low-carbon future is within reach,” adds S-J. “It strengthens our credibility as champions of renewable energy and complements our broader sustainability initiatives.”

For S-J, electrification represents a cleaner, more efficient, and sustainable way to power homes, businesses, and transport. “Transitioning to 100% electric vehicles in our fleet not only reduces our direct emissions but also sets a powerful example for other organisations to follow.”

“For OVO, this goal is more than just an operational target – it’s a reflection of our values. It signals our belief that energy companies have a responsibility to innovate and inspire,” she says. “By leading the way in electrification, we’re fostering the adoption of green energy and enabling our customers to actively participate in the journey towards a zero-carbon world. This isn’t just vital for our business; it’s essential for the planet and future generations.”

The road ahead

Looking ahead, S-J sees tremendous potential to build on the solid foundation OVO has established.

“What truly makes my role special is the culture at OVO,” she shares. “The company’s focus on innovation, sustainability, and its people has made every day a pleasure. I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with incredibly talented and passionate colleagues who all share a common purpose. The sense of teamwork and shared vision has been nothing short of inspiring.”

Key advancements in battery technology, the increasing availability of specialist electric vehicles, and the expansion of charging infrastructure will all play a pivotal role in driving further progress.

“The next few years are filled with transformative opportunities for our fleet,” she explains. “As battery efficiency, range, and vehicle design continue to improve, we expect a broader selection of electric models that better meet specific operational needs.”

A key focus will also be integrating smarter technology.

“By leveraging telematics and advanced fleet management systems, we’ll be able to optimise vehicle performance and overall efficiency,” S-J notes. “This will not only enhance fleet productivity but also reduce operational costs and further lower our environmental impact.”

For S-J, electrification is just one step in a much broader journey toward a fully sustainable future.

“Electrifying our fleet is one of the most tangible ways we can demonstrate our commitment to decarbonisation. It’s how we’re actively addressing the challenges of transitioning to cleaner energy while driving innovation within our industry. By embracing electric vehicles, we’re directly reducing emissions from our operations and inspiring our customers to envision and adopt a more sustainable lifestyle.”

“For OVO, this is more than an operational goal – it’s a reflection of our core values,” she says. “By championing electrification, we’re driving progress, advancing green energy adoption, and empowering our customers to join us in the journey toward a zero-carbon world. This isn’t just critical for our business; it’s essential for the planet and future generations.”

Looking back on the past four years, S-J is proud of what the fleet team has accomplished and excited for what lies ahead. “There’s always more to learn and further progress to make, especially as the energy and fleet industries continue to evolve. I’m eager to continue driving positive change and contributing to OVO’s mission in the years to come.”
