Mark Wheeler of Nissan answers Barker's Dozen

Date: 13 January 2016   |   Author:

1 What was your first job?

Before the days of B&Q I worked on Saturdays in a local hardware store, selling paraffin, shovelling bushels of sharp sand and counting out dozens and dozens of wood screws.

2 What was your first company car, and what do you drive now?

I was the proud owner of an F-plate Ford XR3i  complete with a car phone! Today I drive a Nissan X-trail.

3 What did you listen to on your last car journey?

Radio 4's Just a Minute.

4 What do you wish you could do better?

Play the piano. My parents sent me for lessons for years but I didn't ever practice enough and as a result my dog leaves the room when I start to play!

5 What's your biggest achievement?

Before joining Nissan I worked as part of a team at Motability Operations to launch a programme that has so far enabled more than 50,000 disabled customers to have adaptations, such as hand controls and wheelchair hoists, fitted to their cars. I'm proud to have helped make a small but positive difference to people's lives

6 What are your three favourite films?

Madagascar, Madagascar 2 and Madagascar 3.

7 What's the stupidest thing you've done?

So many to choose from. Aged 15 I crashed into a learner driver on a roundabout on my fixed-wheel bike and lost my front teeth. Then I cycled five miles home - before my mum brought me back to the roundabout to make me look for my teeth.

8 What was the most hotly debated topic at your last meeting?

How best to communicate the positive feedback drivers are providing on the Nissan Leaf and our eNV200 electric van.

9 What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?

At Easter I went for few days to Spain where it rained all the time and my son and I watched more episodes of M*A*S*H than I care to remember - so probably M*A*S*H  from 1972 to 1983.

10 What's the worst thing about your job?

Spending too much time in the office and not enough with customers understanding how Nissan can continue to improve and meet customer needs.

11 What one law would you make or change?

I would make it illegal to eat lunch at your desk!

12 What did you want to be when you grew up?

I changed my mind every week, but growing up near Chatham Dockyard, I could see myself as a captain in the Royal Navy. Unfortunately, my eyesight wasn't good enough!

13 Who is your ideal celebrity date?

Can I be greedy? Mary Berry for baking, Dame Ellen MacArthur for sailing, and Lesley Garrett for singing.
