Matt Dallaway of RAC answers Barker's Dozen

Date: 29 October 2014   |   Author:

The RAC's senior operations manager looks up to Dalglish and Mandela, but looks forward to celeb-dating Reid.

1. What was your first job?

A cashier at a local TSB Bank in Kidderminster.

2. What was your first company car?

I got my first company car when I was working at the MG Rover Group and it was a little metallic blue MG Metro.

3. What did you listen to on your last car journey?

Football commentary on Talksport.

4. What one thing do you wish you could do better?

Speak a second language.

5. What's your biggest achievement?

Becoming a father. I have three children, aged five, seven and nine. It is so rewarding helping and watching them grow and develop.

6. Who are your role models?

As a huge football fan, I would have to say Kenny Dalglish is a big role model. Not only was he a brilliant footballer (for Liverpool and Scotland) back in the day, but he's had a highly successful career as a manager and is a strong leader who has stayed true to his values and his roots. And who could fail to recognise Nelson Mandela as the ultimate role model?

7. What's the stupidest thing you've done?

It wasn't my best moment when I was in my early 20s and I had a bit too much to drink while out with my friends on Christmas Eve. I was not feeling very well the following day and was unable to eat the sumptuous Christmas lunch that my mum had lovingly prepared and spent hours slaving over a hot stove for. Not a good move - to this day I don't think she has completely forgiven me.

8. What was the most hotly debated topic at your last meeting?

Football has been a huge source of debate in the office since it all kicked off again.

9. What's in your garage?

Far too much clutter, and it could do with a good sort out.

10. What's the worst thing about your job?

My commute, so I'd say motorway congestion.

11. What one law would you make or change?

I would make it law that children stay in education until they are 18 years old.

12. What keeps you awake at night?

Nothing. I'm usually so tired my head hits the pillow and I'm out like a light.

13. Who is your ideal celebrity date?

(Newsreader and Strictly Come Dancing contestant) Susanna Reid. We could talk about topical world issues and then she could show me how to do the tango!
