Rupert Pontin of Glass's answers Barker's Dozen

Date: 07 September 2016   |   Author:

1 What was your first job?

I was an estate agent in Weybridge, Surrey.

2 What was your first company car, and what do you drive now?

It was a 1983 Y-plated Vauxhall Cavalier 1.6 GL Saloon in an 'interesting' light blue.
I currently drive a BMW 520d M-sport Touring Auto.

3 What did you listen to on your last car journey?

Radio 4 interspersed with a recent trance mix by Armin Van Buuren.

4 What one thing do you wish you could do better?

At the moment I would like to be better at running!

5 What's your biggest achievement?

Aside from being part of the team at Glass's that has revitalised our position in the UK market, helping raise my 16-year-old twins to be the kind of people they have become and that I can be truly proud of.

6 What are your three favourite films?

Currently The Great Gatsby (2013), The Breakfast Club and Bad Neighbours.

7 What's the stupidest thing you've done?

There are many examples of daft behaviour - although managing to set fire to my hair whilst lighting a BBQ some 20 years ago must be one of the stupidest.

8 What was the most hotly debated topic at your last meeting?

The impact on Glass's market penetration in the UK as the result of our improved car data accuracy and the ever-growing importance of business intelligence.

9 What would be your specialist subject on Mastermind?

 The history of transatlantic liners.

10 What's the worst thing about your job?

The lack of time to develop the opportunities I can see.

11 What one law would you make or change?

I would impose lane discipline on motorways and dual-carriageways much more effectively. Could you imagine the positive impact on traffic and hence the productivity of the country if we could all move around efficiently?

12 What did you want to be when you grew up?

Successfully retired after working in the car industry.

13 Who is your ideal celebrity date?

I could not let the identity of my ideal date slip out, but I feel I would enjoy an evening of discussion with Richard Branson.
