If you saw my blog about e-call and you think it's a life saver then you will be pleased to know that this week two more member states of the European Union have signed the e-call memorandum of understanding.
The signatures of Austria and Germany are quite a coup for the e-safety initiative particularly the German one. This is because Germany is a major car manufacturing member state within the EU and to have them on board is a major step forward to full EU implementation of this important safety system.
The signatures took place at a recent e-safety conference and there is another one taking place in September when there are high hopes of more EU member states signing up. The UK discussions have been described as 'advanced'.
There are now a total of 12 countries committed to the e-call project and the initiative seems to have gained new momentum after what has been a difficult period in which little progress was made.
I've said this before but it still amazes me that nobody seems to be talking about this initiative in the UK fleet industry. This must surely be one of the most important safety related changes to the new car market for some years and no one seems to be promoting it. Is this, by any chance, down to the fact that it will require a black box in every new vehicle and this is not something that anyone wants to actively advertise?
I'm on holiday for a few weeks but will be back at the beginning of July.
