To bio-fuel or not to bio-fuel?

The answer to this depends on what you read but I have just skimmed through a report written for the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

It suggests that bio-fuels are not necessarily all they are cracked up to be. I think we are all in favour of cutting vehicle emissions and reducing our impact on the climate but let's not get drawn into a fuel that might not be suitable.

The manufacturers and fuel companies have already had their fingers burnt with LPG where there were government grants available to offset the majority of conversion costs. Just when LPG started to become credible as an alternative fuel the grants are withdrawn and it no longer becomes economically viable to buy LPG vehicles. As a result the LPG new vehicle market crashes and we all go back to running diesel vehicles. I know we should all want to run green fleets whatever the economic costs but in reality that is just not practical or possible.

I know of at least one colleague of mine that has been offered a bio-ethanol powered vehicle on demo but their nearest bio fuel source is fifty miles away. Not the greatest way to save the planet really!

As always there are two sides to the bio-fuel argument and it's important to listen and understand both of them. All I would suggest is that you do your research thoroughly before you leap into bio-fuels with both feet.
