2007 review

As this is the season to be jolly, I had better refrain from talking about credit a-crunching and fuel prices a-rising, at least for the moment!

There will be plenty of time to take stock of the future prospects for the fleet business in the New Year - after we've all (hopefully) had a well earned break!

Looking back at 2007, the big stories were oil prices hitting almost $100 a barrel and the Corporate Manslaughter Act.

Fuel prices could become a really serious issue next year. But let's not let that spoil Christmas - there will be plenty of opportunity to find innovative ways to mitigate their effects next year.

The Corporate Manslaughter Bill nearly became the dog that didn't bark. It almost ran out of Parliamentary time in July before scraping through at the last minute.

Even though the Act won't come into force until next April, it's already exerting an influence on firms' thinking about their fleets.

I'm sure many managers would agree that there's an 80/20 rule when it comes to fleet risk: 20% of your drivers create 80% of your risk. Some of the research done by Alphabet this year underlined just how astonishingly irresponsible a small minority of drivers can be - such as "driving blind" because they are too vain to wear glasses.

I believe that careless and inefficient drivers will come under their employer's spotlight as never before in 2008.

For now though, it's a good time to take stock of what I hope has been a year of progress and achievement for everyone.

I've had a pretty busy year meeting the many enjoyable challenges of helping to grow our business while nurturing the terrific enthusiasm for freshness and innovation with which we started Alphabet. In fact the company's 10th birthday in May was a highlight of my year.

It has been a pleasure writing this blog throughout 2007 and I very much look forward to continuing the dialogue.

And on that note, I wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year. See you in 2008!

Richard
