BusinessCar Office Blog: 7 November 2008 - M25 bad manners

Date: 07 November 2008   |   Author: Tristan Young

When I tell people that I use the M25 to get to the office, most people think congestion would be my biggest problem. Far from it - at the time I go there is practically no traffic.

For well over a year now I've been commuting to the BusinessCar office using the southern section of the M25, M3 and A20 early in the morning. And the biggest problem I have, apart from the boredom (relieved by The Today Programme), is taxis. Or more specifically private hire cabs, clearly on the airport run to Gatwick.

Their lane discipline, almost without exception, is appalling. Inevitably they can be found dozing in the middle lane of a clear three-lane carriageway or on the four-lane sections they could be in either of the two middle lanes.

I know it's taxis doing the airport run, because after I go past the M23 (Gatwick) turning, their behaviour, miraculously, becomes more in-line with the highway code.

It doesn't matter what type of cab either. It can be a Toyota Carina, a Mercedes S-class or a luxury minibus - all are as bad as each other.

There's been a lot of talk recently that the authorities are relying too heavily on speed cameras to monitor driver behaviour and not enough on police. This certainly seems the case on the M25. I would welcome a few more traffic patrols here to correct poor, rather than just fast, driving.
