Damian James' Blog: 5 November 2008 - Cut road deaths faster

Date: 05 November 2008

Damian James is Head of Transport Provision for Bracknell Forest Council and a technology champion

I see that the House of Commons Transport Committee has called for a further and faster reduction in the number of deaths and serious injuries on the roads.

There are sections of the report that deal with emerging technology that may help to get down below the 40% reduction that is targeted for 2010 but I couldn't help but be a bit disappointed.

On page 368 of 416 under the heading of EU legislation and vehicle technology there are around five lines that mention e-call. As I have spoken about often before the e-call initiative will undoubtedly save lives and serious injuries because emergency response times, direct to the scene of an accident, will be cut. The technology automatically sends location and other specific information to the relevant agencies when activated by a sudden deceleration in the vehicle.

As of yet the UK has not signed the Memorandum of Understanding, paving the way for the introduction of e-call, which 15 or so other EU countries have done. To me the disappointing thing is that this is not even acknowledged by the Committee. Therefore it looks like we will have to wait a while longer before we, the public, can have the comfort of knowing that if the worst does happen someone is already on their way to help you.
