It's amazing how much business car drivers know about driving economically without any formal training.
This was the theme of a conversation I had while sat chatting to an industry sage at the CV Show. We weren't talking about vans, but drivers in general.
When the fuel blockades caused panic buying followed by fuel shortages in 2000 drivers suddenly did two things out of the ordinary.
Firstly, people cut down the number of car journeys they made, which was clear from the lack of traffic on the roads. And secondly, most drivers seemed to be driving much more gently.
You can bet only a tiny proportion had ever been formally taught any economy driving skills, yet everyone was sticking to the speed limit, planning ahead and avoiding unnecessary braking or accelerating.
Given the rapidly rising fuel prices we're seeing at the moment, two questions spring to mind.
How long will it be before you do something to encourage your drivers to practise more economical habits when working? And how long will it be before your drivers do something about their own driving when on personal business?
