Damian James' Blog: 9 March 2009 - Stars for ESC

Date: 09 March 2009

Damian James is Head of Transport Provision for Bracknell Forest Council and a technology champion

I have recently been drawn to the new star ratings which have just come into play from Euro NCAP .

There are now four areas that are tested:

  • Adult
  • Child
  • Pedestrian
  • Safety Assist

The Safety Assist area (along with a rear impact whiplash test) is the new addition to the family and will be looking at the technology within the vehicle and how this could prevent accidents and also what role it can play in reducing injuries if accidents do happen.

One thing that surprised me was that I was under the impression that without Electronic Stability Control (ESC) a vehicle could not be given the maximum five stars. However looking through the recent awards given by NCAP its clear that at least one vehicle (out of four which have been awarded five stars) only has it as an option.

As Euro NCAP's reason for existence is to encourage manufacturers to produce the safest vehicles possible it seems odd that such an important piece of safety technology should still not be considered essential to getting a top rating. Having said that the detail that we can now get on the test results are fascinating and certainly food for thought when any purchase is considered.
