I was fortunate enough to be invited to the first Vehicle Remarketing Association conference late last month, and an interesting and informative day it was too.

You'll hopefully have digested the story on the front of the latest issue (8 February) where BCA director Mark Hankey called for greater sharing of used vehicle pricing data in order to help everyone.

It remains to be seen whether the entire industry, including mortal enemies BCA and Manheim, could bring themselves to share any sort of information, let alone anything that would offer conclusive evidence of the direction in which the industry is moving. And that's without the issue of how the information is managed, how to make sure there's an even supply of give and take, and who will analyse it.

But the conference, and the noises coming out of it, were positive. It's been a low-key start from the Vehicle Remarketing Association in terms of getting out and making a fuss on behalf of the industry, but that's not necessarily a bad thing in the early days, and looks set to change if the well-attended conference with some engaging presentations is anything to go by.

From the 10 founder members last March, the now 50-strong line-up of companies that form the membership includes some heavyweight industry names, and if they can be persuaded to work for the common good, it will be interesting to see what can be achieved.
