The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' blog: 28 July 2011 - Plan and plan again!

Date: 28 July 2011

Mike Waters is senior insight & consultancy manager at Arval, the leading vehicle leasing and fleet management company.

Apparently the UK is the most gridlocked European country, or at least that's the view coming out of some recent research from sat nav company TomTom. It shows that 16 UK cities feature in the top 50 most congested and as you could probably have guessed, London ranks in the top three.

According to the survey, there are eight UK cities just within the top 20. Here are the offenders and their overall ranking:

. 3. London

. 7. Edinburgh

. 10. Manchester

. 11. Bradford

. 12. Belfast

. 13. Oxford

. 15. Birmingham

. 19. Aberdeen

So not great reading, especially if you drive a lot, but it is a given that if you drive in and around busy places there will be a build up of traffic at peak times. That's why it is essential that drivers plan their journey.

Picking the routes that you take, times that you travel and best mode of transport can save you a great deal of time and money, because if you are stuck in traffic your fuel consumption and wear and tear on the vehicle will increase. Combine this with the extra emissions that you produce and journey planning really does make sense.

I accept that sometimes on a journey you will get caught out by traffic or at times you will have no option but to take a journey at a busy time. It's happened to me on several occasions and while it's no fun, just like every other driver you are stuck with it.

However, if you can take the time to plan, you should, because a few minutes thinking about your journey could save you hours of frustration stuck behind the wheel.
