Has anyone seen the weather reports recently? Because I don't want to surprise you but we've been having quite a bit of rain.

The reason I mention it is because I think some motorway drivers haven't noticed what's going on.

Every time I'm out on the road I'm amazed to see drivers far too close to each other, with rain pummelling down on their windscreens and spray making it almost impossible to see.

In fact, it's only when the rain really cranks up a notch, when it's so loud that you can't hear the radio, and so heavy that the wipers can't cope, that the speed of some drivers seems to ease and they drift into the centre lanes until the cloudburst has passed and they can regain speed in the outside lane.

I've said many times that it's poor driver attitude and behaviour that causes accidents, and when I'm on the motorway there's no better example of why that is true.

Talk to any road safety professional and they'll tell you the simple fact that you can't crash a vehicle in open space.

Get too close to another vehicle, leaving not enough time to react or brake, and you are heightening the danger - or, as some might say, riding your luck for every second you don't have a collision.

Changing the subject away from driver safety, it's also an expensive company asset that these drivers are taking chances with.

And for every bill for accident damage that passes across the desk of a frustrated fleet manager it's another cost that could have been avoided.

So why not use the current weather conditions as a moment of leverage to remind drivers of the need to slow down, leave enough space and respect their own lives, other people's lives and the vehicle they've been provided with.

Many drivers do respect these things but sadly, most fleet operators have a selection that do not!

If you're struggling to identify who the 10% or so of high risk drivers are, you could always use an online profiling tool which is designed to help you spot them through a 20 minute assessment so that you can take proactive action.

Much better than identifying them through their accident history or, worse still, their absence from work!
