If you haven't seen the footage of the dogs driving cars in New Zealand it's worth a look http://youtu.be/BWAK0J8Uhzk

For my final blog before Christmas, I felt I should lighten the mood and suggest that if fleet managers across the UK continue to suffer rising accident bills in 2013 then employing dogs may be a cheap chauffeuring option.

If you think I'm barking up the wrong tree, just watch the footage of how sensibly these dogs drive and how much care they are taking manoeuvring around the track. A lesson for us all!

But joking apart, as 2012 draws to a close I feel progress is being made in the fleet sector and we've moved on significantly in recent years with companies taking their duty of care responsibilities more seriously.

Drivers are becoming far more accustomed to being risk assessed and trained, with less resistance compared to the old days of a driver daring their employer to judge their driving - all of which is positive for the road safety agenda.

However accidents, and sadly deaths and injuries, continue at an alarming rate and I agree wholeheartedly with the IAM's request for reviving the target-based approach to road safety that was dropped by the current Government, and I find it incredible that this was dropped in the first place.

However, I regret to say that I feel we will not see that happen in the near future, and for that reason, the corporate sector must continue to stay focused on its own road safety agenda.

On a final note, it was interesting watching the dog's driving because it reminded me of when I was in one of the Lassie Movies when I was younger.

Yes - you guessed it. I played the "lead".

And on that awful joke I'll bid all BusinessCar readers a safe and happy Christmas and New Year.
