The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' Blog: 11 June 2012 - The business case for safe driving

Date: 11 July 2012

Mike Waters is senior insight & consultancy manager at Arval, the leading vehicle leasing and fleet management company.

Companies in the UK take driver safety very seriously firstly because no one wants their employees to face injury or worse, and secondly because safe driving saves money.

At least that's the view from our latest Corporate Vehicle Observatory research.

It shows that these businesses not only take responsibility for driver safety, but many also have the policies in place to support this - prohibiting the use of hands-free mobile phones, restricting unsafe travel and even introducing driver incentives and rewards to promote safer behaviour on the roads.

Although this really shouldn't come as a surprise - road risk is a serious matter.

It is the most dangerous thing that most people do on a daily basis and the results of getting it wrong can be horrible. Plus there's a compelling business case because safer generally means cheaper.

Reduced accident costs, lower insurance premiums and less unplanned vehicle maintenance all generate significant savings.

Additionally, less employee absence and avoiding damage to company reputation also deliver important value to any business.

What some people fail to recognise is that the same rules apply for individuals as safe driving can help to keep vehicle costs down.

Insurance premiums, repair costs, speeding fines, penalty points on your licence are all expenses that can be mitigated against or removed.

Plus we tend to see that safer drivers are more efficient because they drive at lower speeds and less aggressively which reduces fuel usage and therefore costs.

So companies clearly see the business case, and so should drivers. Most important is your safety but you can also save yourself time, hassle and cost too.
