The start point for the best source of fleet information

Paul Barker's blog: 6 December 2012 - Educating an industry to take on training

It's not the first time Roddy Graham, the chairman for the Institute of Car Fleet Management, has made this point, but the key message in his opening address to the association's annual conference was to push for the business car industry to, as a whole, embrace the principle of training its participants in order to lift standards across the board.

The ICFM isn't just looking to train fleet managers, it's pushing for sectors including dealers, leasing and finance, rental, remarketing, insurance, software and more to take advantage of its accredited courses.

Graham estimated that the fleet market in the UK is worth around £5bn, and contends that it needs to be run by people with the extensive knowledge at their fingertips in order to maximise potential.

Training isn't cheap and requires employer support in terms of time as much as money, both of which are more difficult than ever before to liberate in the current climate, but having the best possible staff could be seen as more valuable for longer-sighted companies.

The range of firms whose employees collected qualification certificates at the conference was interesting, and illustrated the shifting appeal of ICFM training.

It was already far from dominated by traditional fleet managers, with manufacturers, leasing firms and others getting involved.

A better-trained industry would only be beneficial for everyone involved, and by the look of the annual conference, the ICFM is better placed than ever before to deliver.
