The start point for the best source of fleet information

Mike Waters' Blog: 28 March 2013 - Some things are worth making time for

I laughed recently when reading a story in the media claiming that British motorists are "too lazy to wash their cars". Apparently 78 percent of the drivers surveyed would rather get their car washed by someone else because they did a better job for an acceptable cost.

And why not! Some of us are happy to get out with a sponge and bucket, but if you would rather pay for the service and they do a good job at a reasonable price, getting your car washed is perfectly normal and acceptable. I also think that the driving factor is time and convenience rather than slothfulness.

While I don't agree with the angle, this story does provide an important reminder that there are certain areas of basic maintenance where we really can't afford to get complacent. Making sure that your vehicle is in tip-top running order can save you money, reduce your environmental impact and ensure your safety.

Tyres provide a great example and should be the first port of call when it comes to basic vehicle maintenance. Regularly checking that your pressures are right and that they have the required amount of tread is quick and easy to do but the benefits are significant. Using less fuel, better vehicle handling and improved safety all provide a compelling case.

There are other well known areas like checking your oil, topping up the water, and making sure that your windscreen washer is filled up which can keep your car or van operating efficiently and can stop minor issues from escalating into something bigger, more serious and undoubtedly more expensive!

You can clearly make a difference to the performance of your vehicle, but for anything that's not basic, it's worth seeking expert support. Regular servicing, and if required MOT, alongside using reputable mechanics to fix any issues that come along will help to reduce your running costs and maximise the market value of the vehicle.

I don't for one minute think that modern drivers are lazy, but I do think that they are busy people with lots to do. However, there are some things that you need to make time for and vehicle maintenance is certainly one of them.
