Fleet managers are changing. This is not big news in itself. The role is one that has evolved considerably in the quarter century that Chevin has been producing fleet software - but there are signs that the changes going on now are the biggest we have yet seen.
Much of this is because of emerging technology. Developments such as increasingly sophisticated route planning and telematics, the further potential of mobile devices and the arrival of "big data" are all playing a part. These are providing the fleet manager with a higher profile within almost every organisation.
Of course, these developments mean that existing fleet managers are having to work hard to keep abreast of new technology but the shift is also attracting a different kind of person into the role. We are seeing more and more technologically aware people entering fleet roles.
Our experience is that fleet managers are starting to see their responsibilities overlap into other departments in much the same way that someone working in a finance or HR function becomes involved in activities across a whole organisation.
We are aware of this because of the way in which fleet software is increasingly being for used non-fleet processes - as a proven and capable enterprise level solution, it is often the best tool available to businesses when a new IT-driven process needs to be created. It sometimes becomes the reporting and analytics centre for the whole organisation.
All of this means that the fleet manager of 2015 is increasingly being given a place at the management top table in a way that would've been considered unlikely even just a few years ago. For fleet managers who are capable of rising to the challenge, these are exciting times.
