The start point for the best source of fleet information

Sam Sterry's blog: What would Santa book?

Date: 17 December 2019

Europcar Mobility Group UK's head of SME explains mobility options for the Christmas period.

Although many businesses are winding down for Christmas, company-owned fleet vehicles are still costing money while idly sat on-site. A business may think, with staff taking holidays, the vehicle isn't costing. And, of course, it's not in terms of mileage. However the fact is, the vehicle still depreciates in value and ongoing costs like servicing and MOTs still add to a business's financial burden.

Flexible rental offers SMEs a viable cost-effective solution when staff are taking their Christmas break. Firms can wave goodbye to long contracts and early return penalties, and instead embrace flexible hire, which allows their fleet to decrease through the school holidays and expand again in January when staff are back on-site.

More importantly, renting eliminates not only the physical cost of servicing and maintenance, but also the unseen cost of administrative staff managing fleet usage. Plus rental from a provider that has a comprehensive fleet means businesses can enjoy the benefits of modern vehicles with enhanced safety features, and more fuel-efficient models to reduce emissions. For added peace of mind for employers and their staff, there's also the benefit of 24-hour breakdown roadside assistance and recovery.

But rental isn't just about reducing a fleet liability at certain times; it works both ways. For businesses requiring a larger fleet over the Christmas period to cope with increased customer demand, rental can supplement a company's fixed fleet. And that could mean a business doesn't need to rely on employees using their own vehicles and all the risks that come with grey fleet.

One man in particular may find rental a good solution at this time of year.

When looking at Santa's business requirements, he's pretty quiet for 364 days of the year, but it's imperative he can get to work on 24 December. As he's got a pretty big consignment and will have a high mileage, he'll need a large vehicle. But he'll probably only need it for just 24 hours.

In the lead up to 24 December, we appreciate he's going to be flat out checking his list twice, so we'll save him time by giving him the option to check-in online and we'll deliver the vehicle to his door at the time he specifies. And to help Santa plan his route, we'll give him the option of a sat-nav and make sure he can give progress reports to the elves via blue tooth. It will be a long night, so best he shares the driving with an additional driver too!

Happy Christmas everyone and here's to a safe and prosperous New Year.
