The start point for the best source of fleet information

Paul Barker's blog: 17 April 2013 - Waves beneath the surface

It's an interesting time to be listening to car manufacturers, especially those talking off the record, about what's going on with their rivals at the moment.

There's an undertow of discontent in some quarters about the activity of rivals, and the damage it could do to residual values across the industry.

We had Peugeot, a brand not historically averse to short-cycle business but one that claims to have made big changes, going on the record last year to say that self-registration and the dumping of excess cars into the market could harm everyone, while Audi has also questioned the behaviour of some more premium brands.

Now, as you may have read here, Ford's UK boss Mark Ovenden is the latest to feel that there are things going on in the marketplace that could be harming residual values.

Like its fellow fleet giant Vauxhall, Ford has been taking good long-term steps to reduce its short-cycle business to move its residual values upwards, and Ovenden is frustrated that the firm isn't getting the credit he feels it deserves while others are doing more short-cycle business "than you would expect certain brands tobe doing".

The RV sector is traditionally very stable with changes to brand perception and values being slow and gradual.

As the market evolves through 2013 and beyond it will be interesting to look back and see which brands have seen their values and perception change significantly, either up or down.
