The start point for the best source of fleet information

Paul Barker's blog: 30 April 2013 - Being green goes hand in hand with being in the black

Date: 01 May 2013

Paul Barker is editor of BusinessCar

The issue of BusinessCar that arrives today is the latest of our half-yearly green specials, where every news story, feature and test report has a low-emission link of one sort or another. Even the Barker's Dozen Q&A on p30 is from the Energy Saving Trust.

The environmental question isn't going away, and although it has slipped behind costs in the eyes of many businesses in the current financial climate, the two are intrinsically linked because lowering emissions cuts fuel bills and taxation for both driver and company.

There are so many strands to the green developments enveloping the industry, including the advances in alternative technologies and infrastructure, relentless drives to cut emissions on conventional petrol and diesel models, and other issues such as local air pollution.

Our annual assessment of the top 20 fleet brands, which ranks their environmental credentials, reveals which is the most eco-friendly brand in 2013. Thank you to the SMMT and to www.cleangreencars.co.uk for the useful data that forms part of this in-depth article - see today's issue of BusinessCar for full details.

The three road tests in our latest issue are all interesting in terms of pushing the ultra-low CO2 agenda forwards, too.

Nissan has made some interesting improvements to the usability of the Leaf EV, sister firm Renault's new Zoe may be the most compelling EV yet, and the new Volvo V60 plug-in is another great development in the world of range-extenders, and the first diesel.
