As we head towards the end of the year it’s good to reflect on the 12 months just gone, and I have to say that, consistent with the shape of the overall economy, it has not been an easy ride for the motorist.
Fuel prices have remained high and continue to be a bugbear for many, especially those who rely heavily on the car and have a high annual mileage.
Much of this cost is made up of duty, and it’s not the only tax that targets drivers.
The full range of vehicle taxation is linked to the environment, which means that unless you can afford the latest, most efficient model, it is a significant burden.
Insurance premiums have also been nudging up, making motoring an expensive activity.
There were also some concerning signs around driver safety and, for the first time in a number of years, driver fatalities were flat as opposed to the reductions that we are used to.
Part of the issue may be the quality of the roads as the unpredictable weather conditions that we have seen in recent years continue to leave surfaces damaged with cracks and potholes.
If there is anything to be positive about, it is that the manufacturers continue to deliver against a tough backdrop.
Their new models are more efficient with lower emissions and better economy. The most desirable cars are not necessarily the most prestigious or sporty, but often the most cost effective.
New vehicle technologies are moving into the market at pace providing choice and sustainability as we see improved efficiency from petrol and diesel variants, while hybrids and even fully electric vehicles provide another alternative.
All while less established manufacturers in the UK are consistently delivering high quality product at affordable prices in order to gain a stronger foothold on the market.
Looking ahead to next year, it is likely to be more of the same, as conditions remain tough, but manufacturers continue to come up trumps, giving the most savvy drivers the ability to manage their costs and benefit from some impressive advances in technology.
