It’s important to be a considerate driver – the way that you act influences your own safety as well as that of others. But some drivers are better than others when it comes to driving etiquette and taking a responsible approach on the road.
There’s loads of research out there that shows that the most annoying driver behaviours include tailgating, not indicating, using a phone while driving, and driving at excessive speeds.
We all know not to do it, but it’s clear that many drivers still do.
That’s why when drivers get caught, enforcement needs to be swift and strong.
If drivers feel that there is a real chance that they will be punished for the way they drive, I’m sure that many would think twice.
I guess that’s the plan based on new rules that come into force this month.
Police will be able to issue £100 fines and three points for careless driving offences that previously had to go to court.
This will include tailgating and ‘hogging’ the middle lane of a motorway – exactly the things that irritate others but happen all too often.
The current fixed penalties for using a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt have also increased by £40 to £100.
So a tough stance is being taken and one that allows immediate punishment for careless or irresponsible driving.
In short, these changes make it easier for the police to quickly punish misdemeanours, hopefully providing a greater deterrent for bad driving.
Over time we will see if changes to police powers make a tangible difference, but based on the feedback that I see from drivers, most of us hope so.
