The Paris motor show once again gave us a sign of what the industry is planning over the coming years.

Seeing new models in the metal can change opinions, so here are some conclusions after traipsing around the French show.

The Renault Megane, crucial to a brand whose sales are plunging on a monthly basis, looks better than the pictures suggest. Interior’s good, too, like the new Laguna’s. And speaking of Laguna, the new coupe version is stunning.

I don’t understand the BMW X1. It’s not much smaller than the X3, and though that will grow, I’m not sure the X1 is small enough to slot into a different market.

Chevrolet seems to be gaining momentum. The new electric-hybrid Volt could honestly be the next big step in lower-emission motoring, while in the shorter term both the new Cruze and Orlando look good inside and out.

Meanwhile, the Seat Exeo borrows almost everything from the previous Audi A4. It’s smart sharing that shows the advantage of being part of the VW Group. Not sure what Audi makes of it though.
