The start point for the best source of fleet information

BusinessCar Awards 2014 - City Car: Vauxhall Adam

Date: 28 January 2014

We now have three different winners in three years for this city car segment, with Vauxhall's new baby superseding the Volkswagen Up, which itself ended the Fiat 500's four-year reign as the boss in this category.

Launched in March 2013, the Adam is Vauxhall's attempt to get in on the Fiat 500's territory as a cute and cheerful little car. A fifth of sales will go to fleets.

The level of personalisation on offer is unprecedented in the mainstream sector, with Vauxhall claiming more than four billion different combinations of colour, trim and options.

Paint choices designed to appeal to a youthful audience include I'll Be Black, Purple Fiction and James Blonde, which follow on from the oddball naming strategy that started with the Adam nomenclature itself and carried on through the Jam, Glam and Slam trim levels.

An engine line-up of 1.2 and 1.4 petrols will be supplemented during 2014 by a new turbocharged 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine that will be both the most powerful and cleanest, coming in with 115hp and under 100g/km for emissions.

The cost and weight of a diesel meant Vauxhall decided against putting such a unit into its smallest model.
