BusinessCar Awards 2014 - Lower medium: BMW 1-series

Date: 28 January 2014

Our 2012 Car of the Year grabs BMW's second lower medium class victory, following on from sector success in 2010.

The new 1-series cured most of the criticisms of BMW's original foray into the lower medium sector by improving the interior and boot space, plus the jarring ride quality that plagued the first-generation car.

The model line-up now covers four petrol and five diesel engines, from the base 114d and 114i right through to the 125i and 125d petrol and diesel models, both offering 218hp.

The most efficient model in the range is the 116d Efficient Dynamics model at 99g/km, while late last year BMW added a Business model to the line-up.

The trim is designed to offer the specification business car drivers look for as standard, to avoid extra benefit-in-kind penalties for optioning equipment.

Standard kit includes 16-inch alloys, Bluetooth, leather interior, heated front seats, auto lights and wipers, and BMW's Business Media navigation pack.

The 1-series range is losing its coupe and convertible variants, with the second-generation sporty siblings instead switching to a separate 2-series line-up, but the core 1-series remains the most relevant party to business car operators, which explains this 2014 BusinessCar Awards.
