It is perhaps surprising that a car so close to the end of its production life can take the top spot in a category that rewards practicality and ingenuity, but less so when that car is the Ford S-max.
The MPV is celebrating eight years at the top of BusinessCar's best MPV category - the same amount of time that it's been on sale for in the UK - which proves that, in the minds of fleet operators, the Blue Oval got it well and truly right first time.
It's only a matter of months until the current model is superseded by an all-new S-max, and we'd by lying if we said the outgoing car wasn't beginning to show its age a bit - an emissions low of 139g/km, for example, isn't outrageous but can be bettered by the competition.
The next version will put pay to that though, and even if the existing car is long in the tooth, it's still an excellent MPV.
The flexibility of the seats and the way in which the space has been used inside are the crucial kinds of elements that have kept it ahead of the curve for so long.
It's also great to drive, a rarity for people carriers, and the styling has aged well.
