BusinessCar Awards 2015 - Luxury: Mercedes-Benz S-class

Date: 26 January 2015

The peerless S-class retains its luxury sector award, and the addition of a pioneering plug-in hybrid has enhanced the model's offering in the past 12 months. Capable of 20 miles on electric power alone (on a full charge),

it emits just 65g/km.

It's clever, too. The car deploys the navigation system, radar sensors and even its camera to predict the route ahead and any surprises, adjusting the balance between electric and petrol use to select the most efficient method. When the battery is drained, the S-class switches to the more than adequate 333hp 3.0-litre petrol engine.

It's not cheap at nearly £88,000, but for drivers doing the right sort of journeys, particularly in and out of London's congestion charge zone, it could make more sense than the S350 diesel that dominates sales.
The S350, launched in October 2013, is powered by a 258hp diesel engine and emits 146g/km, while the petrol-electric hybrid version is more powerful but offers emissions within a gramme of the diesel.

The S-class is a beautifully assembled and supremely classy piece of kit, and a clear leader in a market of excellence.
