BusinessCar Awards 2016: Mainstream Small 4x4 - Hyundai Tucson

Date: 26 January 2016

Most manufacturers boast about their new car's sporty handling and bold design. What's refreshing about the Tucson is that the model places greater emphasis on comfort, good equipment levels and handsome looks.

Off-roaders often carry an economy penalty due to their size and weight, but thanks to a frugal 1.7-litre diesel option, the Tucson emits as little as 119g/km of CO2 and returns an impressive official 61.7mpg.

Admittedly, performance is sluggish, but the more potent 136hp 2.0-litre diesel cuts three seconds off the benchmark 0-62mph acceleration time - to 10.6 seconds - while still sneaking below 130g/km, meaning 23% BIK charges. That's just 2% more than the smaller engine.

All models bar the entry-level version have climate control, a full-size spare wheel, a lane-departure warning system, rear parking sensors and the luxury of heated front seats.

The top two trim levels have autonomous emergency braking, a blind spot warning system and rear cross-traffic alert, which warns the driver of hazards that are hidden from view. The Tucson's comfortable interior should also keep drivers calm and contented on the longest of business trips.
