BusinessCar Awards 2016: Premium Lower Medium - BMW 1-series

Date: 26 January 2016

In fleet-pleasing 116d ED form the BMW 1-series, which was facelifted in 2015, costs a little more in whole-life costs than last year's winner, the Audi A3. However, all 1-series models now have satnav as standard and sharper handling than the Audi.

Fuel economy should keep fleet managers happy, with the 116d ED boasting a claimed 83.1mpg. Emissions are just 89g/km, resulting in a BIK rate of 16% under the current system. Where fitted, BMW's smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox often boosts economy, with the result that the 118d auto emits just 99g/km, has a BIK rate of 17% and has an official fuel economy figure  of 74.3mpg.

BMW also offers a 125d performance diesel version. It takes just over six seconds to accelerate to 62mph, while attracting low 20% BIK charges. Several of the petrols also offer very strong economy. For example, the 118i auto emits as little as 112g/km and attracts 17% BIK. It's a genuine alternative to diesel.

Although the BMW's interior may not match the A3's chic simplicity, it is comfortable and feels suitably upmarket, so helping to justify the car's premium over mainstream rivals.
