BusinessCar Awards 2016: Premium Upper Medium - Jaguar XE

Date: 26 January 2016

Jaguar's new baby has made something of a dramatic entrance, grabbing this Premium Upper Medium Car of the Year prize, as well as our headline Business Car of the Year award.

Considering the carmaker has been absent from the sector since the X-type bowed out in 2009, it's a very impressive debut for the XE. The company has managed to tick the boxes for emissions, residual values and running costs, while also producing a car that looks stylish and is good to drive.

Fleet volume is likely to be split between the 163hp and 180hp versions of the new 2.0-litre diesel engine known as Ingenium, which is built at the company's all-new factory in Wolverhampton. Jaguar has also invested in its corporate team to ensure sales support matches planned volumes.

The established competition is fierce. Many doubted Jaguar would be able to produce a car able to compete with the huge breadth of strengths that the BMW 3-series, Audi A4 and Mercedes C-class boast. It's not perfect - refinement, packaging and some interior quality and functionality are where improvements could be made - but it's fair to say the XE is a huge success, and a fitting return to the sector for the British brand.
