BusinessCar Awards 2016: Sporting car - BMW 4-series

Date: 26 January 2016

Following a year when it received a Highly Commended prize, the BMW 4-series has matched its 2014 achievement of a spot at the top of the sporting car podium.

It is not the sportiest machine business users can have, but excels in providing a sleeker, sharper handling alternative to the 3-series saloon - so boosting enthusiast drivers' bragging rights - without any benefit-in-kind penalty. Available in coupe, convertible and sleek five-door Gran Coupe forms, the 4-series offers drivers plenty of choice.

It's the same story with the engines. Emissions are as low as 109g/km - meaning 19% BIK - with economy rising to 68.9mpg for the 418d Coupe and Gran Coupe models. At the other end of the scale, there are ludicrously powerful M4 versions for those with a hefty monthly allowance and no care for the 35% BIK rate. Several petrol and diesel models bridge the gap, offering an appealing blend of low emissions and strong performance.

With standard-fit satellite navigation, the option of BMW's slick-shifting eight-speed automatic gearbox, and reasonable running costs, the 4-series is the sporting car that best satisfies the head as well as the heart. It's return to the top spot in this category is well deserved.
