Techies 2014: Best Green Development - Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

Date: 26 August 2014

Highly Commended: Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, Tusker

Mitsubishi is talking bullishly about the Outlander Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle being a "game changer" in the segment, and it's easy to see why.

Combining a petrol engine with an electric motor, it's capable of around 32.5 miles on electric power alone before switching to a petrol-electric hybrid. That technology offers figures of 44g/km of CO2, putting the car in the 5% BIK band for this year.

As Mitsubishi proclaims, it's a full-size four-wheel drive SUV with five seats and a big boot, and for drivers doing less than 30 miles between charges, it won't use any fuel. And best of all is the price, which, post-Government £5000 grant, is comparable with the equivalent diesel Outlander, rather than being saddled with the kind of price premium that is putting some people off plug-in cars. Employers' National Insurance expense will also be reduced as a result of the Outlander's ultra low-emission vehicle status.

This category was one of the most impressive in terms of depth of entries, so we've chosen two Highly Commendeds.

Hyundai has moved into leadership of the hydrogen fuel cell arena by developing a version of its ix35 crossover model powered by the zero tailpipe-emission fuel. The first fuel cell to enter series production, Hyundai is already running hydrogen-powered cars with fleets in Europe, with seven cars due to be operational in London imminently.

We also highly commended Tusker for its efforts to help fleets cut their environmental impact in salary sacrifice through both its impressive low-emission vehicle microsite offering a wealth of information and help to drivers considering ULEVs, and by developing a carbon offsetting facility during the order process.
