Alfa not serious in fleet until '09, says Nicoll

Date: 16 August 2006

Alfa MD Nicoll says the company won't see big fleet improvement until 2009

Alfa Romeo's UK md, Christopher Nicoll, has conceded the ailing Italian brand will not be a major force in the UK fleet market until 2009 when its 147 replacement beds in.

He told Fleet Week: "There is a lack of presence in the fleet market and a lack of confidence in the brand. To ruin the image is a quick job. To get it back takes longer." Alfa languished at number 31 in the 2005 fleet sales charts, selling only 876 cars to fleet Jan-to-June this year - below Porsche and Smart.

Nicoll's two key priorities now are a smaller, revamped dealer network (due to shrink from 70 partners to about 50 by 2007) and a much stronger focus on customer satisfaction. After consistently coming bottom or near bottom of the JD Power survey Alfa has commissioned the same agency to help it improve customer care and boost sales without discounting.

Nicoll explained: "To continue selling 5000 vehicles a year in the UK is not an option. In the past Fiat and Alfa's internal definition of customer expectations were the same. The truth is the Alfa brand hasn't met customer expectations but at the September Paris show announcements to our structure will be made that will change things."
