Business-friendly turbo engine for revised Astra

Date: 17 November 2006

Astra

Vauxhall is giving its Astra a clean-up with a subtle exterior refresh and two new engines.

The front and rear lights and front bumper are revised, along with extra chrome detailing on the grille, while the three-door Sporthatch gets a new honeycomb-style grille to mark it out as the sportier model. Sales start in January.

Under the bonnet is where it gets more interesting, with the turbocharged 170PS 2.0-litre engine dropped in favour of the 180PS 1.6 turbo first seen in the Meriva VXR and also heading for the supermini Corsa VXR, although Vauxhall will turn up the power for its next hot hatch.

The good news for business drivers is that the 1.6 turbo comes in six BIK tax bands lower than the engine it replaces at 185g/km, as well as offering a combined fuel economy 16% better at 36.7mpg.

Vauxhall has also revised its 1.6-litre Twinport engine, adding another 10PS to take it to 115.
