CO2 basis for new 25 c-charge

Date: 19 July 2006

Ken Livingstone is planning to increase the congestion charge to £25 a day for drivers of high CO2 emitting cars.

Livingstone has asked Transport for London to produce proposals that would also see a reduction in the £8 a day rate for drivers of cars with low CO2 emissions. A scheme is due to be revealed in September, and the first part, for low-emitting cars, could be in place from 2008. The £25 tax on cars with CO2 emissions of more than 226g/km would follow within two years.
