Councils to be given new roadwork management powers

Date: 13 October 2006

Transport Minister Gillian Merron has produced draft regulations that arm local authorities with better powers to coordinate street works in an attempt to reduce road congestion and disruption.

Currently, local authorities utilise the Traffic Management Act 2004 to manage the network of roads within their jurisdiction but have had limited power.

The new regulations will allow local authorities the ability to balance the needs of road users with the need for essential, but disruptive, diggings by utility companies.

In the future, local authorities will also be able to restrict further roadworks following substantial street work.

Commenting on the new powers Merrin said: "We want local authorities to do all they can to co-ordinate works in their roads to keep traffic moving."

The regulations will be subject to a six-week consultation.
