Devil's Punchbowl tunnel given go ahead

Date: 29 October 2006   |   Author: John Mahoney

An ambitious multi-million pound project to build a tunnel under the Devil's Punchbowl on the A3 in Surrey has been given the go ahead by the Government.

Costing £371m, road planners hope tunnelling a dual lane under the Punchbowl will cure the local area's infamous bottleneck, while providing Portsmouth residents with a dual carriageway link to the M25.

A tunnel was favoured since it protects the surrounding area, which is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest.

An underpass will also be provided for cyclists and pedestrians to cross the carriageway.

Work is expected to begin next year.
