DfT invests £4m in traffic pollution research

Date: 10 October 2006

The Department for Transport had a busy time this morning.

As well as announcing a £12m future transport technology scheme, it is also ploughing £4.1m into a research project that uses mobile sensors to monitor traffic pollution.

Small sensors that fit into a person's pocket along with larger ones mounted on buses will track air quality data, plotting how weather conditions, street design and driver behaviour impact upon air quality.

The Government will use the data to shape future policy and commercial decisions.
