Fords Kimber eyes niche growth for LCVs

Date: 16 August 2006

Ford is looking to expand its commercial vehicle ranges sideways no meet consumer demand for more niche products, according to new commercial vehicles director Steve Kimber.

"We're looking at niches within the CV market. We're looking where to exploit and grow," said Kimber. "The more specific a product you can provide, the better you can do."

He used the Fiesta Sportvan as an example of this niche strategy. The Sportvan is powered by the 90PS 1.6 diesel, but gets sports seats, leather steering wheel and gearlever, alloys and more sporty styling including front and rear spoilers. "That's a good example of what we're talking about," said Kimber. "It's not big volume but it's absolutely right for some people, and it's volume we wouldn't get unless we've got the Sportvan."

Kimber predicts a quieter 2007, following the launches of new Transit and Ranger, facelifted Transit Connect and the Fiesta Sportvan derivative this year. "Next year we'll be consolidating what we've got, as well as bringing new derivatives and ideas to market."
