Mazda considers new mini-MPV

Date: 03 October 2006

Mazda is considering expanding its role in the burgeoning mini-MPV sector with a "full seven-seater" model aimed at complementing the 5 and its 6+1 seating format.

Outlining a "feasible space wagon" James Muir, president of Mazda Europe, said: "There is room to expand our presence below the 5 with a three-row, seven-door format product."

Mazda sources believe the 3-based option would have greater appeal in the business car sector, particularly among user-choosers. It would incorporate conventional doors rather than the sliding format found on the 5.

Muir insisted that this potential rival for VW's Touran and Vauxhall's Zafira would not undermine the 5.
