The Department for Transport has launched a consultation looking into cutting new car CO2 emissions.

The consultation is part of an EU-wide search for a replacement for the current voluntary agreement between car makers and the European Commission into reducing car CO2 output.

Being run by the clean fuels and vehicles division of the DfT, it is described as "an initial consultation to gauge stakeholder views and inform policy development. It is the Government's intention to hold a full public consultation on this topic. The timing and content of this consultation will be wholly dependent on the content of the Commission's communication on their CO2 strategy for cars, expected by the end of 2006".

The DfT's Neil Johnson said: "The Government is currently developing its position on the successor arrangements for the Voluntary Agreements and is particularly keen to hear views on the different policy options available."
