New Mini to cut fuel and tax costs

Date: 16 August 2006

The runaway success that is the Mini turns a new chapter next month as the next generation car makes its debut at the Paris motor show.

Powered by a range of all-new engines, including a range-topping 175PS turbocharged 1.6, the new Mini will have better performance and fuel economy plus lower CO2 emissions.

Looks-wise, it might be a little difficult to tell new from old, but the next-generation Mini sees a raft of benefits. Most importantly, quality and comfort are on the up, and a completely redesigned suspension will rid the small car of its unforgiving ride without compromising its entertaining handling.

Drivers and passengers will have more space thanks to the Mini's 60mm extra length.

Inside Mini-fans will be delighted the centrally located speedo remains, as well as period toggle switches that hint at the original.

Also carried over will be the six-speed automatic with the option of using wheel-mounted paddles to change gear.

On sale in December, the Mini is expected to be an instant fleet success, building on this year's storming half-year performance that saw the brand become the 23rd biggest supplier to fleet ahead of Chrysler. Last year 6202 Mini's went to business users.
