Smart shows off new Fortwo

Date: 10 November 2006

Smart has released the first picture and details of its new Fortwo, which arrives in the UK next autumn.

The DaimlerChrysler-owned company claims the second generation of its iconic citycar is more comfortable, agile, safer and greener than the car it replaces.

The length is increased by 20cm, and the company says the car is reengineered and has uprated petrol engines, despite the lack of difference in styling.

The Fortwo gets a new transmission, replacing the first generation car's jerky bugbear of a shift. The same three trim levels of Pure, Pulse and Passion remain, with pricing and spec to be announced in the run-up to the car's UK launch in a little under 12 months.
