Vivaro tops van security ratings

The long-awaited van security ratings from Motor Insurance Repair Research Centre, Thatcham, have revealed the Vauxhall's Vivaro Sportive as the most secure van you buy.

The top-spec van from the Luton-based manufacturer gained five stars for its ability to resist theft of the actual vehicle - testing the immobiliser, locks and any vehicle identification - and four stars for resisting theft of items from the LCV - involving putting the alarm, door locks and glazing under the spotlight.

Thatcham's 'theft of' and 'theft from' double five-star New Vehicle Security Ratings scheme has been in place for cars since 2001, but the new module including light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes only went live earlier this month.

Vauxhall believes the Sportive model did particularly well because of its standard alarm and clever car-like locking system - featuring a one keyfob 'plip' for driver's door opening, a second 'plip' for other doors and a separate third button to unlock the rear doors only.

The rest of the Vivaro range and the sister Combo product also did well, gaining four stars for 'theft of' and three for 'theft from' and matched its biggest rival - the Ford Transit.

Unsurprisingly, it was mainly the older LCVs still on the market that fared less well - the Citroen C15, Daihatsu Hijet and Land Rover Defender only managed a one-star rating for each test - but surprisingly, two newer vans were just as poor - the Daihatsu Extol and LDV Maxus.
